AI Detector Insights
What AI detector does my school use?
Canvas, Brightspace, Blackboard and Moodle don't run an AI detector of their own. Schools add one through an integration, such as Turnitin, Copyleaks or GPTZero. Your syllabus or instructor is the reliable way to know which one your course uses, and whether you can see the result.
Facts below are as of October 2026: we checked each vendor's documentation on October 11, 2026. Platforms, licenses and school policies change, so confirm the details for your course.
Quick answer: AI detectors by learning platform
We checked the documentation for four common learning platforms. None documents a built-in AI detector. AI scores come from a tool the school connects, and each tool decides what students can see.
| Learning platform | Built-in AI detection | Common integrations | Can students see results? |

Does Canvas have an AI detector?
No. Canvas does not include an AI detector of its own, and we found none in Instructure's documentation. What Canvas offers is a way to connect one. Instructure's release notes for the Document Processing App describe instructors adding a third-party tool to assignments that accept text entry or file uploads. Submissions are sent to that tool for analysis, and its report appears in SpeedGrader. Those notes list Turnitin and Packback as the only supported tools. Turnitin can also be connected through Canvas's Plagiarism Review setting, which likewise needs an online assignment with text entry or file uploads.
Other detectors connect to Canvas too. In July 2026, Copyleaks announced that Instructure had selected it as the recommended AI and text-matching partner for Canvas. GPTZero offers a Canvas integration that a school sets up once for the whole institution, with results shown alongside SpeedGrader.
If your course uses Turnitin, the AI score sits inside Turnitin's report rather than in the Canvas interface, and students can't see the AI writing indicator or report. Instructors can download the AI report as a PDF and share it. Turnitin also offers AI writing detection only to institutions that license Turnitin Originality, so a Turnitin similarity score in your course doesn't by itself mean an AI check ran.
Brightspace (D2L), Blackboard and Moodle
Brightspace (D2L)
D2L announced a partnership with Copyleaks in July 2023 that put Copyleaks' AI content detection on Brightspace's IntegrationHub. Turnitin connects to Brightspace assignments as well. In Turnitin's Asset Processor integration, AI scores appear only if the institution has a Turnitin Originality add-on license, and Turnitin's student guide states that it does not display AI writing scores to students. Copyleaks says its Brightspace integration lets teachers decide how much access students get.
Blackboard (Anthology)
Blackboard includes SafeAssign, but Anthology describes SafeAssign as a text-matching tool: it compares submissions with existing works and reports the percentage of matching text. It is not described as an AI detector, and your instructor decides whether you can see its report. For AI detection, Blackboard schools can add Turnitin or Copyleaks.
Moodle
Moodle's documentation says it doesn't come with any pre-installed plagiarism prevention methods; a site administrator has to add them. The Moodle Marketplace lists a Turnitin plugin that works with Moodle assignments, discussions, quizzes and workshops and requires a Turnitin license, and a Copyleaks plugin that detects potential plagiarism and AI-generated content.
Which AI detector do teachers and professors use most?
We could not find an independent, up-to-date survey that ranks AI detectors by how many teachers use them, so be wary of precise market-share claims. The vendor documentation does show some patterns as of October 2026:
- Turnitin and Copyleaks both document integrations for all four platforms above, and Canvas's Document Processing App lists Turnitin and Packback as its only supported tools.
- Turnitin's AI writing detection is a licensed add-on (Turnitin Originality). A school can use Turnitin for similarity checks without having AI scores at all.
- Copyleaks is the partner D2L announced for Brightspace in 2023, and Copyleaks says Instructure chose it as the recommended AI and text-matching partner for Canvas in 2026.
- GPTZero offers an institution-wide Canvas integration and a free checker on its website that any teacher can use.
- On the Moodle Marketplace in October 2026, the Turnitin plugin listed 2,961 installations and the Copyleaks plugin listed 445. That is a rough signal for Moodle only, not a market share.
For your course, what matters is the tool your school licenses and any checker your instructor uses on their own. That is why the next sections focus on finding out.
Do discussion posts and quizzes get checked?
Sometimes. It depends on the platform and the tool:
- Canvas: the Document Processing App and Turnitin's Plagiarism Review setup both attach to assignments that accept text entry or file uploads. Copyleaks says its Canvas integration also covers comment and discussion scanning.
- Moodle: if the administrator allows it, Turnitin can be turned on for forums, quizzes and workshops as well as assignments. In quizzes, it only works with essay questions of at least 20 words.
- Blackboard: Copyleaks says teachers can paste text from discussion boards or quizzes into a scan.
Length matters for AI scores. Turnitin's AI Writing Report needs at least 300 words of prose in a long-form format, and Turnitin says its model doesn't reliably detect short-form writing such as bullet points. A discussion reply or quiz answer under 300 words can be checked for matching text without getting a Turnitin AI score. An instructor can still paste any post into a standalone checker, so follow your course's AI policy for every graded task, not only essays.
How to find out which detector your course uses
- Read the course documents. Check the syllabus, the assignment instructions and your school's academic integrity policy for a named tool and for the course's rules on AI use.
- Ask your instructor. Ask which tool checks the assignment and whether you'll see the report. The answer can differ from course to course.
- Look at the submission page. In Brightspace's Turnitin Asset Processor integration, you are asked to accept Turnitin's end-user license agreement before Turnitin processes your work. In Blackboard, a SafeAssign statement and a list of supported file types mean SafeAssign is in use. Turnitin's guide to Canvas integration types shows what each Turnitin assignment view looks like.
- Check after you submit. Look in your grades and submission details for a report icon or link. A Turnitin similarity report doesn't mean an AI check ran; that needs a separate license.
- Search your school's help pages. IT and teaching-center pages may list the integrations your school supports.
Check your draft before you submit
You can check a draft with Humaniser's free AI detector, with 30 free checks a day and no account. It is not the same model your school uses, so its score will not match Turnitin, Copyleaks or GPTZero, and a low score guarantees nothing.
Use it to find passages that read as generic, then revise them in your own words and keep your drafts. If the assignment allows AI help, follow the disclosure rules in your syllabus.
What if you're flagged?
A flag is the start of a conversation, not a verdict. Turnitin itself says its AI writing model may misidentify human-written text and should not be the sole basis for adverse actions against a student. Research points the same way: in a 2023 study in Patterns, seven widely used detectors labeled more than half of 91 essays by non-native English writers as AI-generated.
Ask which report and which passages were flagged, gather your drafts and version history, and ask to talk it through. Our guide to AI detector false positives explains how to prove you wrote your work and includes an appeal template. If you also received a similarity score, our AI detector vs plagiarism checker guide explains how to read the two reports.
Common questions
What AI detector do teachers use?
It depends on the school. A school can connect a detector such as Turnitin, Copyleaks or GPTZero to its learning platform, and a teacher can also paste text into a standalone checker. Your syllabus or instructor is the reliable way to find out which one applies to your course.Sources: Turnitin, Copyleaks, GPTZero
Does Canvas detect AI?
Not on its own. As of October 2026, Canvas sends assignment submissions to tools a school adds, such as Turnitin, and those tools produce any AI score. Copyleaks and GPTZero also offer Canvas integrations.Sources: Instructure, Copyleaks, GPTZero
What AI detector do colleges use?
Each college chooses its own. Turnitin integrates with Canvas, Brightspace, Blackboard and Moodle, but its AI writing detection needs a Turnitin Originality license, so a college can use Turnitin for similarity checks without AI scores.Sources: Turnitin: Canvas Plagiarism Framework FAQ, Turnitin: Using D2L with Turnitin's Asset Processor, Turnitin: Which Blackboard integration does your institution use?, Moodle Marketplace, Turnitin: AI writing detection FAQs
Can teachers see AI detection in Canvas without Turnitin?
Only if the school adds another tool. Copyleaks and GPTZero both offer Canvas integrations that show results alongside SpeedGrader. Without an integration, Canvas itself shows no AI score.Sources: Copyleaks, GPTZero, Instructure
Is there a free AI detector teachers use?
GPTZero offers a free checker on its website; scans over 10,000 characters need a free account. Humaniser's AI detector gives 30 free checks a day without an account. Free checkers use different models from the tool your school licenses, so their scores won't match it.Source: GPTZero
